An Alabama teenager beat her best friend to death after the 17-year-old victim flirted with the girl’s 39-year-old boyfriend, authorities said.
Investigators found the beaten, partially nude body of Alexis Marie Garcia in Blount County Thursday morning, nearly three weeks after she was last seen on March 1, AL.com reported.
Samantha Wright, one of Garcia’s best friends, and Wright’s boyfriend, 39-year-old Shannon Yager, have been charged with capital murder, Blount County District Attorney Pamela Casey announced Friday.
Investigators said the two beat Garcia unconscious after she began to take off her clothes and make advances toward Yager.
Wright, 18, was wearing her friend’s jeans, shoes and underwear when police interviewed her about the killing — those items were missing from Garcia’s body when seach teams found it found face-down in the woods.
Garcia was last seen on March 1, and her mom reported her missing four days later.
Days later, two teens came forward and told police Wright confided in them that she might have killed Garcia. The 14- and 13-year-olds explained to deputies that Wright told them she was hanging out with Garcia and Yager, but lost her temper when her friend started hitting on her boyfriend.
Wright beat Garcia unconscious, and she and Yager took Garcia into the woods, the teens said.
Meanwhile, Wright’s father reported a disturbing phone call he got from his daughter. He told deputies his teenager called him on March 9 and told him she was in a blood-splattered room, but didn’t remember getting there because she blacked out.
She explained that she was walking through the woods earlier with Garcia and Yager earlier that day, but wasn’t sure where they were anymore. Wright said she feared for their safety and then abruptly hung up the phone. Wright’s dad said he couldn’t get in touch with his daughter after that.
Detectives found the couple 40 miles away from Blount County in St. Clair County. When they interviewed Wright and Yager about Garcia, the couple gave varying accounts of what happened.
Wright said the three were using heroin, meth and other drugs. While the three were driving, Wright passed out — and she woke up to find Garcia taking off her clothes, she said. Yager said the two friends started arguing after that.
Each faces a capital murder charge.
