Of What Went Down...
The rapper born Tauheed Epps was walking with members of his entourage in downtown San Francisco before a performance in nearby Oakland Sunday afternoon June 9. Three men, one with a firearm, approached the group, police said.
Spokesman Dennis Toomer stated that San Francisco police believed 2 Chainz had not been the victim of the robbery; rather, it had been a member of his entourage (“He was not the victim of a robbery,” he said this morning. “He was there, but he wasn’t the victim.”).
Several hours later, during a follow-up call to SFPD, Toomer said that the information had been correct at the time of the original call, but later in the morning, investigators informed him that the victim was actually 2 Chainz.
Toomer says one shot was fired. Police say the suspected shooter apparently got away in a gray sedan.
Toomer said they were approached by a suspect carrying a handgun, who fired a gunshot. While most of the group scattered, 2 Chainz reportedly fell to the ground and was approached by the suspect, “who robbed him and fled the scene.” the rapper was robbed of his wallet, which contained credit cards and cash money, as well as a cell phone.
Police also confirmed that those involved “are being very uncooperative,” and that the suspect has been neither located nor identified.
Police say they responded to a shots fired call at 4:36pm and when they arrived at the scene 2 Chainz was there — and alone. 2 Chainz simply told them that he was relieved of his wallet and wanted to handle the situation himself. A San Francisco sergeant says video footage of the incident shows the rapper and his 14-person (not 5-person) entourage running away from the incident “like cockroaches running from a flashlight.”
"He and his crew were walking in the 800 block of Howard (headed to or leaving the Green Door Dispensary) around 4:36pm. They were approached by two Hispanic males; one produced a handgun and a shot was fired. Mr. Epps is saying he was robbed of a wallet, credit cards, US Currency and a cell phone. The suspect is still at large, and the investigation is ongoing. The suspect is 20 to 30 years old, 5 foot 6 inches and about 130 pounds. He was wearing a dark shirt and blue jeans."
But 2 Chainz sounds like he's denying anything went down at all!? As of this afternoon, the rapper is now fanning the rumors on Twitter when he tweeted,
"Rule #1 if a rapper gets robbed people usually post items that has been taken. Rings, chains, watch, money etc."
"Rule #2 if a rapper gets shot he usually go to hospital or dies."
Oh, and lest we forget -- 2 Chainz also added ...
"Rule #3 we definitely got geeked up in San Fran, best smoke in the world. 2 blessed 2 stress."
His comments seem to suggest that he wasn’t held up, but there’s also a sense of ambiguity to his comments. 2 Chainz hasn’t issued any sort of formal statement via his reps… yet. More on this as the parties involved get their stories straight. The 35-year-old rapper may be trying to steer attention away, but San Francisco Police can confirm Epps' name was listed as a victim in the case.
The Atlanta-based rapper is signed with Def Jam Records and was in the Bay Area to perform at KMEL-FM's annual Summer Jam concert Sunday night at the Oracle Arena in Oakland.
